ABOUT THIS COURSE:

Students registering for this course will cover the key details of the 6th year portion of the Leaving Certificate Computer Science course. If you have not already done so, please contact us to discuss the student's individual needs prior to registering for this course. This may suit certain students as a supplement to self-study, or those who have previously studied 5th year LCCS elsewhere.

Students attending this course will be expected to do a significant amount of work outside of class time, particularly those hoping to complete the course in less than the recommended two years.

As with our general LCCS offering, students must have the support of their schools to sit the exam and submit coursework for correction, and should be informed prior to the start of the course to ensure that students are appropriately registered in time for the exam. The Academy of Code will support the sign-off for the coursework, but cannot take any responsibility for registering students with the SEC or providing an exam centre.

This Form must be completed and signed by your school principal by Oct 22nd 2021 and returned to the Academy of Code.

COURSE INFO:

Autumn Term: 17th Sep - 10th Dec
Spring Term: 115th Jan - 7th May

Class run for 1 hr weekly (25 weeks). Additional supplemental sessions will be offered on occasion throughout the year at no additional cost.

Students should plan on spending a minimum of 2-4 hours outside of class on their computer science work each week.

COURSEWORK SUBMISSION

30% of the overall LCCS grade is based on a project completed by the student over a period of 10-12 weeks, starting in January of their exam year.

The sign-off process for the coursework is comparable to any other leaving cert subject: the supervising teacher will sign the submission, confirming that the work has been completed by the student themselves as per the subject specification, and the principal then signs to confirm they are satisfied on the same basis. Students will also need to be registered to sit the LCCS exam in their school. It is therefore vital that every student participating in the 2021- 23 course submits a signed School Support Form no later than October 22nd, 2021, confirming that the principal is happy to cooperate with the Academy of Code on the sign-off of coursework.

Students will likely need to purchase a micro:bit or other similar device for this course - please allow €20-50 for this. There may be other additional costs depending on the coursework prescribed by the SEC (details to be released by the SEC in December)."
